Is a Marine Solid Fuel Range Cooker Right For My Boat?

Traditional cooking ranges are large and bulky appliances but can be used in larger boats and barges. There are also smaller, slimmer model on the market which allow for use in narrowboats and other smaller craft. Getting the right size stove for your boat will ensure that you are never either too hot or too cold.

Ranges are fantastic for residential boats. As most residential users find that they have some form of heating going all winter long, these appliances make use of this heat to also provide space for cooking, offsetting the winter heating fuel bill with reduced usage for the galley.

How Do I Use a Solid Fuel Range Cooker?

Solid fuel cooking ranges work slightly differently to the gas ovens many of us are used to from domestic kitchens. They do not have temperature settings as such. When the range has heating up, some parts of the range will be hotter or cooler than others. You will need to use the right part of the range to cook your dish, based on whether you need a warm, cool, or hot oven. There are many cookbooks which are specifically designed for these types of cookers, to guide you through the switchover process. Most traditional British and world foods are straightforward to cook on a range, roast dinners especially.

Firing up a range is much the same as with a solid fuel stove. If you are comfortable with a stove, you should find a cooking rage straightforward.  They have the same ventilation and flueing requirements, this is something our experienced boat cooking range fitters can advise you on.
